In a recent incident at the Kwar hydroelectric power project, several labourers were safely rescued after a truck caught fire inside a tunnel. This project is situated on the Chenab River, within the mountainous terrain of the Kishtwar district in the Jammu region. The rapid response to the situation ensured no casualties, highlighting the safety measures in place.
The Kwar Hydroelectric Project is a significant 540 MW run-of-river hydropower endeavor located in Jammu and Kashmir. This project is under the development of Chenab Valley Power Projects Private Ltd (CVPPL), a joint venture between NHPC Ltd and the Jammu & Kashmir State Power Development Corporation (JKSPDC). The equity contributions are split with NHPC Ltd holding 51 percent and JKSPDC possessing 49 percent.
Once operational, the project is expected to generate approximately 1,975.54 million units in a year that is 90 percent dependable. This highlights the project's potential in contributing significantly to the region's power supply.
The Government of India is actively supporting the Kwar Hydroelectric Project by providing a grant of Rs. 69.80 crore for the necessary infrastructure. Additionally, a substantial grant of Rs. 655.08 crore is allocated to support the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, aiding the equity contribution of JKSPDC in M/s. CVPPPL.
The development of this project not only aims to enhance the power capacity in the region but also stimulates economic activities through job creation and infrastructure improvements.
