In November 2025, Union Minister of State (MoS) Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, from the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying (MoFAHD), released the annual report titled ‘Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS-2025)’ at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. This release coincided with the celebration of National Milk Day on November 26.
The BAHS 2025 report, published by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), offers comprehensive insights into the livestock and dairy sector trends in India. This edition is based on the Integrated Sample Survey (ISS) conducted from March 1, 2024, to February 29, 2025.
This survey is crucial as it provides essential data on the production estimates of Major Livestock Products (MLPs) such as milk, eggs, meat, and wool. Such data plays a vital role in research and policy formulation within the livestock sector.
India currently holds the first position globally in milk production, with total output estimated at 247.87 MT for 2024-25, up from 239.30 MT in 2023-24. This reflects a year-on-year (Y-o-Y) growth of 3.58%. The per capita availability of milk has also seen an increase, rising from 319 grams per day in 2014-15 to 485 grams per day in 2024-25.
India ranks second globally in egg production, with a total output estimated at 149.11 billion eggs for 2024-25, marking a 3.18% increase Y-o-Y. The per capita availability of eggs has improved from 62 eggs per annum in 2014-15 to 106 eggs per annum in 2024-25. The leading states in egg production are Andhra Pradesh (18.37%), Tamil Nadu (15.63%), and Telangana (12.98%), contributing to 64.37% of the national total.
Currently, India ranks fourth in meat production globally, with total production estimated at 10.50 MT during 2024-25, reflecting a Y-o-Y growth of 2.46%. Poultry is the key contributor, accounting for approximately 50% of total meat production. The top states for meat production include West Bengal (12.46%), Uttar Pradesh (12.20%), and Maharashtra (11.57%), which together contribute 57.55% of the national total.
