COP16 is the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). This significant global summit brings together countries to negotiate and make critical decisions regarding biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.
The conference commenced in Cali, Colombia, in late 2024, with extended sessions concluding in Rome in early 2025.
Susana Muhamad, the environment minister of Colombia, served as the president of COP16.
COP16 is notable for successfully resolving funding mechanisms that had previously stalled. This represents a positive advancement in multilateral environmental cooperation during a time when many other international environmental negotiations faced impasses.
COP16 builds upon the framework established at COP15 in Montreal (2022), which set the foundational "30x30" targets and principles. The focus of COP16 was on practical implementation and funding mechanisms necessary to achieve these ambitious goals.
