ISIS-Khorasan, commonly known as ISIS-K, is a faction of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization. Established in 2015, it comprises militants who have pledged allegiance to ISIS, including individuals from Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. The primary aim of ISIS-K is to carve out a province within ISIS's self-proclaimed caliphate, focusing on the area historically referred to as “Khorasan.” This region encompasses parts of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia, Russia, and Iran.
The foremost objective of ISIS-K is to create an Islamic state in the Khorasan region, aligning with the broader goals of the ISIS caliphate. The group strives for territorial control, aims to undermine neighboring governments, promotes sectarian violence, and seeks to recruit members by exploiting social and economic rifts. ISIS-K is notably engaged in conflict with the Taliban in Afghanistan while simultaneously targeting other regional countries.
ISIS-K has executed numerous attacks across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Russia, and Uzbekistan. Its aspirations include expanding operations against the United States and Europe. The group is infamous for its brutal tactics and has claimed responsibility for various terrorist incidents, including one of the most devastating terror attacks in Russia in recent history.
Funding for ISIS-K originates from multiple avenues, including financial support from ISIS in Syria and local sources within Afghanistan. The group capitalizes on illegal activities and the challenging economic conditions of the regions where it operates to sustain its operations.
ISIS-K represents a substantial threat to regional security in Central Asia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Its attacks are designed to destabilize governments, incite sectarian strife, and foster an atmosphere of chaos and fear. The actions of this group significantly complicate the efforts of both local and international forces to uphold peace and stability in the area.
The international community, comprising various governments and organizations, has condemned the actions of ISIS-K. Countermeasures include military operations, intelligence sharing, and counter-terrorism strategies aimed at dismantling the group's networks and curtailing its expansion. Collaborative international efforts are vital in addressing the threat posed by ISIS-K to global security.
