The BRICS Summit 2023 is a significant gathering of leaders from the BRICS nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. This summit is centered on enhancing economic cooperation, addressing developmental challenges, and tackling pressing global issues.
The agenda primarily consists of discussions among BRICS leaders, BRICS-Africa Outreach, and BRICS Plus Dialogue. A focal point of the summit is the expansion of BRICS, with deliberations on potential new member countries, including Argentina, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran.
BRICS represents a coalition of developing economies that seeks to offer an alternative to the G-7 nations. The grouping has initiated projects such as the New Development Bank and the Contingency Reserve Arrangement. Notably, over 40 countries have expressed interest in joining, with 19 having formally submitted applications for membership.
Leaders are set to engage in discussions regarding intra-BRICS trading using national currencies and various global developments. The Johannesburg Declaration will tackle issues like climate change, African trade, and enhancing women's participation in peace processes. Additionally, China's initiatives, including the Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative, will be focal points of the discussions.
While there will be conversations about trading in national currencies among BRICS nations, there currently appears to be no definitive plan for a "BRICS currency" aimed at competing with the dollar.
India's position on certain initiatives, particularly concerning China's Belt and Road Initiative and the Global Development Initiative, will be closely monitored during the summit. In the past, India has opted not to endorse an Economy Roadmap at the SCO meeting for similar reasons.
The invitation extended to countries from Asia, South America, and small Island States underscores BRICS' commitment to fortifying cooperation with developing nations on economic matters.
There is a strong expectation that the summit will address and potentially make decisions regarding the induction of new member countries, as indicated by India's discussions with the Iranian President.
South Africa has chosen the theme "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism" for this year's summit. This theme emphasizes various priority areas, including climate change, African trade, and the role of women in peace initiatives.
The discussions at the BRICS Summit 2023 will also encompass the Global Development Initiative (GDI), which is a crucial proposal from China, the largest economy within the BRICS framework. The GDI is expected to be an integral part of the economic roadmap for BRICS countries. While specific details remain to be disclosed, the GDI aims to bolster economic cooperation and development among BRICS nations. Leaders will evaluate China's GDI proposal and its potential effects on fostering mutual growth, sustainable development, and economic inclusivity within the BRICS coalition. This initiative aligns with BRICS' broader goals of creating an alternative to the traditional global economic structure and enhancing collaboration among emerging economies.
