During the dry months from April to June, these ice stupas begin to melt, providing:

  • Reviving streams: Some ice stupas contribute to naturally flowing streams that have previously dried up.

Types of Ice Reservoirs in Ladakh

There are five main types of ice reservoirs utilized in Ladakh:

  • Basin: Simple depressions where water collects and freezes naturally.
  • Cascade: Structures resembling steps made from dry stones, facilitating water to freeze in stages.
  • Diversion: Stream water is directed to shaded areas, creating "frozen pipes" of ice.
  • Ice stupa: The previously mentioned structures, mimicking Buddhist stupas.
  • Ice mountain/fall: Water sprayed over a cliff instantly freezes, forming an ice structure.

Challenges of Using Ice Stupas

Despite their potential, ice stupas face several challenges:

  • Limited data: There is still insufficient data regarding their water storage capacity and long-term effectiveness.
  • Annual construction: These structures need to be rebuilt each year, which can be labor-intensive.
  • Dependence on natural glaciers: Their existence is contingent upon the continued presence of natural glaciers.

Other Measures to Combat Climate Change in Ladakh

In addition to ice stupas, several initiatives are underway in Ladakh to address climate change:

  • Spraying snow on natural glaciers: This technique helps prevent black soot from accelerating the melting process.
  • Building "carbon negative" structures: The SECMOL campus utilizes solar power and local materials to minimize environmental impact.
  • Promoting sustainable construction: Earth and naturally occurring soil are employed to create earthquake-resistant buildings.
