India's Performance in the Climate Change Performance Index 2026

In the latest Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) for 2026, India has seen a significant drop, slipping 13 places to the 23rd position. This development marks a crucial shift in India's standing in global climate change efforts.

Understanding the Climate Change Performance Index

The Climate Change Performance Index is an essential tool published by the combined efforts of Germanwatch, New Climate Institute, and Climate Action Network International. It aims to evaluate the performance of the world's largest emitters in various critical areas such as emissions, renewable energy, and climate policy. The Index assesses countries across four categories: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, renewable energy, energy use, and climate policy. Since its inception in 2005, the Index has been a vital measure of climate action progress.

Highlights of the 2026 Index

This year, Denmark, the UK, and Morocco have taken the lead, demonstrating exemplary performance in the CCPI. In contrast, some of the G20's major players, including China, Russia, the US, and Saudi Arabia, ranked poorly, occupying the 54th, 64th, 65th, and 67th positions, respectively.

India's fall from the 10th to the 23rd position signifies a shift from being a 'high performer' to a 'medium' performer. This change is attributed to India's significant role as a producer of oil, gas, and coal, affecting its overall climate change performance. The country scored medium in categories such as GHG emissions, climate policy, and energy use, but received a low score in renewable energy.

The CCPI 2026 highlights the importance of strategic policy adjustments and increased commitment to renewable energy sources. As India continues to navigate its role in the global climate landscape, its performance in upcoming indices will be crucial for its international standing in climate action.
