In 2022, India witnessed an impressive 31.6% increase in resident patent applications, the highest growth rate among all countries, as reported by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This significant rise underscores India’s evolving innovation landscape and its commitment to strengthening intellectual property rights.
India filed a total of 55,718 resident patent applications in 2022. This remarkable growth rate is part of a larger trend that emphasizes the nation's focus on research and development. Additionally, the number of patents granted rose by 10.5%, reaching a total of 28,391 patents.
While China continues to lead in the volume of patent applications, its year-over-year growth was significantly lower, recorded at just 1.1%. The data from WIPO highlights a global trend of increasing intellectual property registrations, with India showcasing a noteworthy improvement in its innovation index.
