In a remarkable initiative by the Geological Survey of India (GSI), two of India’s geological wonders are on the verge of achieving global recognition as UNESCO Global Geoparks. This move aims to spotlight Lonar Lake in Maharashtra and the duo of St. Mary’s Island and Malpe beach in coastal Karnataka, underscoring India’s rich geological heritage on an international scale.
The journey to being included in the UNESCO Global Geopark Network involves meeting stringent criteria, such as developing a dedicated website, creating a comprehensive management plan, implementing protection strategies, and establishing financial and partnership structures. In August, the GSI embarked on this process with a 100-day timeline to advance its plan.
Achieving UNESCO Global Geopark status would not only emphasize the geological significance of these sites but also promote them as centers for education and eco-tourism. This designation is akin to the prestige of a ‘World Heritage Site’ but focuses on natural landmarks, elevating India’s geological marvels to an international platform.
Through this endeavor, the GSI highlights the importance of preserving and celebrating India’s geodiversity, aiming to bring these natural wonders to global attention and conservation efforts. Securing the recognition of Lonar Lake and St. Mary’s Island as UNESCO Global Geoparks would be a significant milestone in India’s dedication to its geological heritage, enriching both scientific understanding and public appreciation for these extraordinary natural phenomena.
