During the 2022-23 crop year, horticultural production is anticipated to increase by 1.4%, achieving a remarkable total of 351.92 million tonnes (mt), compared to 347.18 mt in the previous year, 2021-22. This growth is largely attributed to enhanced productivity.
Fruit production is projected to reach 108.34 mt, a modest rise from 107.51 mt in 2021-22. Meanwhile, vegetable production is expected to be 212.91 mt, up from 209.14 mt the previous year. While there is an overall increase in the production of fruits, vegetables, spices, and plantation crops, yields for onion and tomato crops have unfortunately declined.
The sustained record production in both food grains and horticulture is a testament to the dedication of Indian farmers, the expertise of scientists, and farmer-centric government policies. The collective efforts of all stakeholders have played a crucial role in achieving these remarkable results.
Production of plantation crops rose to 16.05 mt from 15.76 mt in the previous year. The potato yield is projected at 60.54 mt, showing an increase from 56.18 mt a year prior.
Initial estimates suggest that onion production will be around 31.1 mt, a decline from 31.69 mt in 2021-22. It is anticipated that the final figures may fall below 31 mt. Similarly, tomato production was preliminarily estimated at 20.62 mt, slightly down from 20.69 mt in the previous year.
Despite the overall positive trajectory in horticultural production, specific crops such as onions and tomatoes have not mirrored this success. The unwavering dedication of Indian farmers, coupled with scientific advancements and supportive policies, has been instrumental in driving growth in the horticulture sector.
