By adopting new strategies that enhance soil carbon levels, these regions can achieve higher yields than those produced by current agricultural practices, thereby improving food security.
Biochar, a carbon-rich solid formed by partially combusting organic waste or biomass with limited oxygen, is an effective tool for redistributing carbon within soils. It enhances the carbon content and fertility of soils, contributing to sustainable agricultural practices.
Future advancements in technology may enable us to optimize soil organic carbon levels, potentially increasing the global production of staple crops such as maize, wheat, and rice by 4.3%. This increase could feed an additional 640 million people, addressing pressing food security challenges worldwide.
Research into deep-rooted perennial crops and biotechnologies designed to enhance carbon transfer into the soil, such as specialized maize varieties, is underway. These innovative technologies hold promise for boosting soil organic carbon levels and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
