Government of India's Strategic Push in Electronics Manufacturing

In a significant move, the Government of India has approved 17 new projects under the second tranche of the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS). This initiative, announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), involves a total investment of approximately Rs 7,172 crore. The announcement was made at an event organized by the India Cellular Electronics Association (ICEA) in New Delhi.

Details of the Approved Projects

These newly approved projects are part of a broader strategy to boost the production of electronic goods and their components within India. With this second tranche, the total number of approved projects under ECMS has reached 24, involving a cumulative investment of Rs 12,704 crore. The first tranche included 7 projects with a total investment of Rs 5,532 crore.

The projects are expected to produce components valued at Rs 65,111 crore and create 11,808 direct jobs. They will be distributed across nine states and union territories, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

Components and Technologies Involved

The approved projects will focus on manufacturing various electronic components such as camera modules, connectors, oscillators, enclosures, and multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs). Among these, the multi-layer PCBs are anticipated to attract the highest investment of Rs 3,183 crore. These components have applications in key sectors like smartphones, IT hardware, wearables, telecom, electric vehicles, industrial electronics, defense, medical electronics, and renewable energy.

Notably, India's first-ever Optical Transceiver manufacturing facilities will be established by Jabil Circuit India Private Limited and Zetchem Supply Chain Services Private Limited in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, respectively.

Launching India's First-Gen IP-Powered Silicon Chip

During the same event, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also launched 'ARKA-GKT1', India's first-generation IP-powered silicon chip. This innovative chip, developed by Cyient Semiconductors Pvt. Ltd. in partnership with Azimuth AI, is designed for high-efficiency edge AI and smart energy applications. The chip integrates advanced computing methods and hardware accelerators, offering up to 10 times better performance while reducing costs and complexity.

As India aims to become a global hub for semiconductor design and technology innovation, the launch of this chip marks a major milestone in the country's journey towards self-reliance in the semiconductor domain.

Future Prospects

According to MeitY, India's electronics sector is projected to reach USD 500 billion in manufacturing value by 2030-31, underscoring the significance of these initiatives in transforming India into a major player in the global electronics market.
