A 45-year-old farmer was recently killed in a suspected tiger attack near the Barahi range of the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh. Forest authorities are investigating the incident to ensure human-wildlife conflict mitigation and to strengthen local safety measures.

ABOUT PILIBHIT TIGER RESERVE

Location: The Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR) is located in the Pilibhit and Shahjahanpur districts of Uttar Pradesh. It forms part of the Terai Arc Landscape in the upper Gangetic Plain Biogeographic Province and lies along the India–Nepal border at the foothills of the Himalayas.

Total Area: The reserve covers 730 sq. km, including a 602 sq. km core zone and buffer areas that support ecological connectivity.

RIVERS

The Gomti River originates from the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve. It also serves as a catchment for several other rivers, including the Sharda, Chuka, and Mala Khannot.

HABITAT & GEOGRAPHY

The reserve’s habitat is characterized by dense sal forests, tall alluvial grasslands, savannahs, and seasonal swamps. These are maintained through periodic flooding from surrounding rivers.

The Sharda Sagar Dam, extending over 22 km, marks the boundary of the reserve. The area experiences a dry and hot climate, combining dry teak forests and Vindhyan-type soils.

VEGETATION

The vegetation of Pilibhit Tiger Reserve consists of diverse forest types such as:

  • Tropical Moist Deciduous Forests
  • Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests
  • Seasonal Swamp Forests
  • Tropical Semi-Evergreen Forests

FLORA

Sal woodlands dominate about 76% of the reserve area with healthy natural regeneration. Grass meadows are interspersed throughout the forest, featuring species such as Saccharum, Sclerostachya, Imperata, Themeda, Bothriochloa, Vetiveria, Apluda, Dichanthium, Digitaria, and Cyperus.

FAUNA

The reserve supports a rich biodiversity, including several endangered and threatened species. Key fauna include:

  • Tiger (endangered)
  • Swamp Deer
  • Bengal Florican
  • Hog Deer
  • Leopard

The reserve also harbors a vibrant bird population, featuring species like the Swamp Francolin, Great Hornbill, Bengal Florican, Lesser Florican, Black Francolin, Jungle Bush Quail, Red Junglefowl, and Asian Openbill.
