Sanchipat manuscripts are traditional handwritten texts from Assam, created on processed bark of the sanchi tree. They hold immense historical and cultural significance, preserving ancient religious, literary, and artistic traditions of the region.
The Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Society formally handed over five ancient Sanchipat manuscripts to the Rashtrapati Bhavan Library for long-term preservation and public display.
The initiative aims to honour the classical status of the Assamese language and preserve its rich literary and devotional heritage, ensuring that future generations remain connected to the state’s cultural roots.
The collection includes the following valuable manuscripts:
Revered satradhikars from prominent Vaishnavite monasteries (satras) in Assam — including those from Majuli, Titabor, and Morigaon — played a key role in contributing and safeguarding these manuscripts before their official handover.
These manuscripts reflect the devotional, philosophical, and poetic essence of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement in Assam, initiated by Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciples. They represent a cornerstone of Assamese cultural identity and linguistic evolution.
The manuscripts will be preserved and displayed at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Library, offering access to scholars, historians, and the public. This ensures their protection while promoting research and awareness of Assam’s literary heritage.
The Secretary of Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra expressed deep gratitude to all contributors and highlighted that this initiative will revive interest in Assamese literature and heritage, inspiring future cultural preservation efforts.
