Chabahar Port, located in southeastern Iran, is a vital asset for India's strategic and economic interests. It provides India with direct access to Central Asia and Afghanistan, bypassing the need to route through Pakistan. This port serves as a viable alternative to the crowded Bandar Abbas port, enhancing India's role in regional trade and connectivity.
Historically, India relied on the Karachi-Gwadar route via Pakistan to reach Afghanistan and Central Asia. However, Chabahar offers a direct link through Iran, effectively bypassing Pakistan. This shift reduces both logistical and security challenges, offering a more stable route for Indian trade.
Geopolitical tensions in West Asia, such as the Iran-Israel conflict and US airstrikes, coupled with events like the April 2025 Pahalgam attack, have heightened the need for secure supply routes. India is expediting the development of rail and road infrastructure at Chabahar to ensure reliable trade routes even during regional crises.
India is collaborating with Iran to integrate Chabahar into Iran's national rail and road networks, particularly linking it to Zahedan. This connection will facilitate the movement of goods to Afghanistan, Central Asia, and Europe through the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).
According to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Chabahar handled approximately 80,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in FY25, predominantly in bulk cargo. As infrastructure improvements continue, containerized cargo handling is expected to rise significantly.
The completion of the vital Chabahar-Zahedan railway link is anticipated by 2027. This project will greatly enhance the port's connectivity and economic significance.
Unlike Bandar Abbas, which is located near the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, Chabahar is outside this chokepoint. It offers a more secure and uninterrupted route for maritime trade, especially during regional hostilities.
Chabahar provides India with improved access to Central Asian markets, reduced shipping costs, and more stable energy and cargo supply routes. It also facilitates regional trade under INSTC, connecting India more directly with Russia and Europe.
Chabahar bolsters India's ties with Iran, diminishes Chinese influence in the region—particularly from the Gwadar Port under CPEC—and amplifies India's economic and strategic footprint in West and Central Asia.
India plans to intensify construction activities, including the expansion of the port and railway network. Joint endeavors with Iran will focus on enhancing port operations, customs systems, and multimodal connectivity, transforming Chabahar into a comprehensive commercial and strategic hub.
