The Skill Census is a state-wide initiative by the Andhra Pradesh government aimed at assessing, classifying, and documenting the skills of individuals aged 15 and above. This initiative seeks to identify skill gaps, promote targeted interventions, and enhance workforce development across the state.
The census is scheduled to take place in January 2025, following the successful completion of a pilot project in Mangalagiri.
With one of the highest unemployment rates in India, Andhra Pradesh is in dire need of detailed workforce data. The Skill Census is designed to provide insights that will enable better skill-based job opportunities, reduce unemployment rates, and align workforce capabilities with the demands of various industries.
The census will be inclusive, involving all demographic groups, including women, youth, and older adults aged 15 to 59 years. Special efforts will be made to reach out to migrant workers and those who may be hesitant to share their data.
Data collection will be conducted by enumerators using bilingual formats, leveraging both digital tools and physical surveys. Approximately 50,000 enumerators and supervisors will be deployed to ensure accuracy in the data gathered.
The Skill Census is expected to unveil in-demand skills, identify skill gaps, and reveal untapped potential across various sectors. Additionally, it will assist the government in designing skill-based training programs that align with industry needs.
This initiative will emphasize tailored interventions for young individuals and women, helping them gain access to skill development programs and better job opportunities.
The census will prioritize key sectors such as construction, manufacturing, IT, agriculture, and dual-technology applications, aiming to boost employment opportunities in these areas.
By integrating demographic and regional insights, the Skill Census aims to target skill development programs and improve economic conditions in underserved areas of the state.
The Skill Census will employ a data-driven approach to workforce planning, which is essential for helping industries thrive, reducing unemployment, and equipping citizens with skills that are relevant for the future.
