Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam's Morigaon district is currently experiencing an early influx of migratory birds as winter approaches. This natural haven attracts avian species from regions as diverse as Europe, America, and the Tibetan plateau.
Situated in the eastern part of Guwahati, Assam, Pobitora is located near the village of Mayong, famed as India's "Black Magic Capital." This sanctuary was established in 1998, covering an area of 48.81 square kilometers. It comprises the Rajamayong Reserve Forest and Pobitora Reserve Forest, areas once part of the expansive floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, known for their abundant flora and fauna.
Pobitora was designated a reserved forest in 1971 by the Government of Assam Tourism. It was later incorporated into a rhino breeding initiative called "Indian Rhino Vision 2020" by the Government of India, emphasizing the conservation of the Greater One Horned Rhinoceros.
Approximately 72% of Pobitora comprises wet savannahs, featuring species like Arundo donax, Erianthus ravennae, Phragmites karka, Imperata cylindrica, and Saccharum spp. However, water hyacinth (Eichornia crassipes) poses a significant challenge, forming dense mats that hinder waterfowl.
Pobitora boasts the highest density of Greater One Horned Rhinoceros in India. In addition to these iconic creatures, the sanctuary is home to leopards, wild boars, barking deer, and wild buffaloes. It also hosts over 2,000 migratory birds and various reptiles, enriching the sanctuary's biodiversity.
