The Indigenous Integrated Air Defence System (IADWS) is a multi-layered air defence system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It integrates multiple indigenous defence technologies, including the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM), the Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles, and a high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW).
The maiden test of the IADWS was successfully conducted off the coast of Odisha at Chandipur. The site is known for hosting several major DRDO missile trials.
During the test, the IADWS successfully engaged and neutralized three different aerial targets — a high-speed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), a multi-copter drone, and a high-speed fixed-wing UAV — demonstrating its ability to detect and destroy multiple threats across varying ranges and altitudes.
The system integrates all its core components — missile launchers, detection and destruction units, radars, and command infrastructure — through a centralized Command and Control Centre developed by DRDO. This integration enables real-time coordination, seamless communication, and precision targeting against airborne threats.
The IADWS represents a significant advancement in India’s indigenous defence capabilities. It enhances the nation’s layered air defence against drones, missiles, and enemy aircraft, ensuring the protection of vital installations, critical infrastructure, and strategic military assets. The system also reduces dependence on imported air defence technologies.
The successful test was observed by senior DRDO scientists, representatives from the Indian Armed Forces, and top defence officials. Their presence underscored the importance of the milestone in strengthening India’s defence preparedness.
The Defence Minister congratulated DRDO, the Indian Armed Forces, and industry partners for the successful trial. He stated that the test reaffirms India’s capability to establish a robust, multi-layered air defence architecture built on indigenous technologies.
The Indigenous Integrated Air Defence System (IADWS) marks a major step in India’s journey towards technological self-reliance in the defence sector. By combining missiles, sensors, and directed-energy weapons under a unified command system, it offers a powerful shield against modern aerial threats and strengthens India’s strategic deterrence capabilities.
