Ethylene oxide is a chemical compound commonly employed as a sterilizing agent. It plays a crucial role in the spice industry by reducing microbial contamination. However, it is important to note that ethylene oxide is considered carcinogenic if utilized beyond certain limits.
The Spices Board of India has initiated discussions with CODEX, the international body responsible for food standards, to establish uniform global limits for the use of ETO in spices. This initiative was prompted by incidents where Indian spices exported to Hong Kong and Singapore faced recalls due to concerns over ETO contamination.
The primary challenge surrounding ETO usage is the absence of international standard limits, which results in varying regulations among different countries. Furthermore, there currently exists no standardized method for testing ETO levels in spices, making compliance and safety assurances more complicated.
To uphold the safety and quality of spice exports, especially to regions like Hong Kong and Singapore, the Spices Board has mandated that spice consignments undergo testing for ETO contamination prior to shipment. This proactive measure aims to mitigate risks associated with microbial contamination.
As a sterilizing agent, ETO plays a vital role in ensuring the microbiological safety of spices, which is essential for maintaining market access and consumer trust on an international scale. However, due to its carcinogenic properties, the use of ETO must be closely monitored and controlled.
In the fiscal year 2023-24, India achieved impressive spice exports valued at $4.25 billion, representing a 12% share of the global spice export market. This statistic underscores India's prominent role in the international spice trade.
