The National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) is a centrally sponsored initiative aimed at promoting natural farming practices among one crore farmers across India. This mission is designed to ensure sustainable agriculture, healthier food production, and improved soil health. With an allocated budget of ₹2,481 crore, the mission seeks to bring transformative changes in the way farming is practiced in the country.
Several regions in India have demonstrated the success of natural farming. In Andhra Pradesh, farmers in Anantapur have successfully cultivated millets and groundnuts using natural methods, including cow dung-based fertilizers. Similarly, apple orchards in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, thrive with organic compost and natural pest control techniques. In Rajasthan, bajra (pearl millet) cultivation in Jodhpur benefits from mulching and jeevamrut application. Punjab's wheat and basmati rice are grown without synthetic inputs, ensuring chemical-free food production. Tamil Nadu farmers use panchagavya, a blend of cow products, for banana and sugarcane crops.
These techniques not only enhance productivity but also contribute to sustainable farming practices.
Natural farming provides numerous benefits to farmers. In Andhra Pradesh, millet yields have increased, while apple productivity in Himachal Pradesh has improved. In Rajasthan, farmers benefit from reduced costs as they save on chemical inputs. The market value of organically produced goods is higher, offering financial benefits to farmers. Additionally, natural farming supports sustainability by enhancing soil health and conserving water resources.
The NMNF plays a crucial role in addressing environmental issues by reducing chemical contamination, enhancing biodiversity, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. By promoting sustainable practices, the mission contributes to a healthier planet.
Currently, around 10 lakh hectares in India are under natural farming. By 2025, the NMNF aims to expand this coverage further, train farmers in eco-friendly techniques, and increase consumer awareness about organic produce.
Various crops are suitable for natural farming, including pulses like moong and urad, cereals such as rice and wheat, fruits like mangoes, guavas, and papayas, and vegetables such as tomatoes, brinjals, and okra.
Under the NMNF, farmers receive training, financial assistance, and resources necessary for implementing natural farming techniques. These efforts ensure that more farmers can transition to sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.
“Sustainable agriculture is the path to harmony between humans and nature.”
