The Ecomark certification represents a significant initiative by the Indian government aimed at promoting environmentally friendly products. Introduced through the Ecomark Rules, 2024, this certification is managed by the Ministry of Environment and outlines the guidelines for labeling products that are less harmful to the environment.
The primary objective of Ecomark is to foster the utilization of products with a lower environmental impact. It emphasizes sustainable consumption and resource efficiency, aligning with the principles of LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment). Additionally, Ecomark seeks to mitigate misleading claims regarding a product’s environmental benefits, empowering consumers to make well-informed choices.
For a product to qualify for the Ecomark label, it must satisfy several specific criteria:
The process of obtaining an Ecomark involves manufacturers submitting an application to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CPCB, or an authorized verifying agency, evaluates whether the product meets the established guidelines. If it qualifies, the Ecomark is granted, typically within a span of 60 days.
The Ecomark label serves as a valuable tool for consumers, enabling them to easily identify sustainable and eco-friendly products. This promotion of responsible consumption encourages better environmental practices and assures that the products have undergone rigorous evaluation to meet stringent environmental standards.
Ecomark plays a crucial role in supporting the LiFE initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This initiative aims to foster sustainable living and address the climate crisis. By advocating for environmentally conscious products, Ecomark aligns with India’s overarching climate change objectives and its commitment to green growth.
