Dwarka is an ancient city located on the western coast of Gujarat, believed to be associated with Lord Krishna. It is considered a major archaeological, religious, and cultural site that holds great historical value in Indian civilization.
The ASI has initiated a fresh exploration project through its Underwater Archaeology Wing to investigate submerged archaeological remains near Dwarka and Beyt Dwarka. The aim is to collect, study, and date objects found during the expeditions to understand the city’s antiquity.
A nine-member team from the ASI’s Underwater Archaeology Wing is conducting the work. They are supported by scientific experts, divers, and archaeologists to carry out both underwater and coastal investigations.
The explorations are being carried out near the south of the Gomati Creek and in the eastern seaside of Dwarka. Both Dwarka and Beyt Dwarka—an island believed to be part of ancient Dwarka—are being studied.
The team is examining seabed sediments, coral and marine deposits, and conducting dives to search for submerged structures and objects. Earlier excavated areas are being re-inspected, and the present condition of earlier finds is being documented.
Between 2005 and 2007, the ASI had conducted similar investigations. Items such as copper and iron objects, rings, beads, pottery, and anchors were discovered. A 10-meter area with 26 archaeological layers was excavated near the Dwarkadhish temple.
Techniques such as removal of biological deposits from objects, classification of archaeological layers, and scientific dating are being used. These help determine the origin and age of the artifacts.
The study will be expanded to nearby regions like Okhamandal. Teams will look for potential underwater structures, use diving operations, and collect more samples. These findings will be preserved, documented, and analyzed to reconstruct Dwarka’s historical timeline.
The goal is to better understand ancient Indian maritime history, city planning, and cultural practices through submerged remains. It also aims to highlight Dwarka’s contribution to India’s heritage.
