The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has unveiled its latest innovation, a new Aadhaar mobile application, now accessible on both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Released through an early access program, this app empowers residents to carry and verify their Aadhaar digitally while offering heightened privacy and identity control.
UIDAI's initiative aims to refine authentication processes, diminish reliance on physical documents, and provide a secure, user-controlled digital identity platform.
With the app, users can share their Aadhaar details digitally without the need for a physical card. Aadhaar information can be shared using QR codes or as verifiable credentials, ensuring both authenticity and swift validation.
To enhance privacy, shared Aadhaar information is masked, showing only limited digits of the 12-digit Aadhaar number. This reduces the risk of misuse during routine verifications.
The app supports up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device, provided they are linked to the same registered mobile number. This feature is particularly beneficial for parents managing their children's Aadhaar profiles.
The app includes a biometric lock/unlock system, granting users control over their biometric data. Once locked, biometric information remains secure and cannot be used unless the user deliberately unlocks it.
UIDAI has simplified access to the new Aadhaar app. Follow these steps:
Once set up, you can view Aadhaar details, retrieve your QR code, share verifiable credentials, and manage biometric settings.
The app offers a modern, paperless experience for utilizing Aadhaar in daily services. It simplifies verification for banking, admissions, passport issuance, and driving licenses. It reduces paperwork and reliance on physical documents while empowering users with greater control over how and when their Aadhaar is shared. The app enhances data security through built-in biometric locks and masked sharing and supports family Aadhaar management, ideal for parents or guardians.
UIDAI emphasizes that this app "reimagines how residents engage with their identity," providing portability, privacy, and ease of use on a single platform.
The new Aadhaar app is currently in early access, allowing early adopters to explore its features and provide feedback. UIDAI actively encourages users to report any issues or suggestions directly via the app or at feedback.app@uidai.net.in. The authority plans to incorporate this feedback for further enhancement before a wider national rollout.
