The Digital Agriculture Mission marks a transformative approach to modernize India's farming sector. Initiated by the Indian government, this ₹2,800-crore project focuses on building a robust Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) aimed at consolidating diverse agricultural data into a unified platform. This mission seeks to simplify the management and accessibility of vital farm-related information.
At the heart of the mission lie three pivotal components:
Through the mission, farmers will gain streamlined access to an array of government services such as loans, insurance, and financing. By dynamically linking farmers' data to their Aadhaar IDs, management of records related to crops, livestock, entitlements, and benefits becomes more efficient. Notably, initiatives like the Crop Sown Registry are set to enhance data accuracy for improved crop management and insurance disbursements.
Despite its promising outlook, the mission faces scrutiny over the accuracy of current agricultural production data. The introduction of the Digital Crop Estimation System (DGCES) aims to refine production estimates by offering a detailed overview of crop health, though skepticism about data reliability persists.
This mission is poised to significantly boost India's agricultural digital infrastructure, offering tools that enhance decision-making and resource management. By integrating multiple data points, the mission facilitates risk management concerning floods, droughts, and crop health, fostering sustainable and efficient farming practices.
Part of a comprehensive initiative under the Modi government, the mission anticipates substantial advancements within the upcoming two to three years. With a budget of ₹2,817 crore distributed across several financial years, crucial milestones are expected to be achieved by 2025-26.
Several pilot projects, such as the Digital Crop Surveys and the establishment of Farmer Registries, are already underway in selected districts. These pilots will guide the mission's broader implementation, ensuring that digital tools are effectively customized to meet the needs of Indian farmers.
