Basics of the UAE Golden Visa Scheme

1. What is the UAE Golden Visa?

The UAE Golden Visa is a long-term residence visa introduced by the United Arab Emirates government, allowing foreign nationals to live, work, and study in the country without a national sponsor. It is typically issued for 5 or 10 years and targets investors, entrepreneurs, scientists, professionals, and exceptional students.

2. Who Can Apply?

The scheme welcomes talented and high-net-worth individuals from India and around the world who contribute significantly in fields such as business, science, medicine, technology, art, culture, and sports.

3. Do Applicants Need a Sponsor?

No. Unlike most expatriate visa categories in the UAE, Golden Visa holders do not require a local sponsor. This offers greater independence and flexibility for long-term residents.

4. Can Family Members Be Included?

Yes. Golden Visa holders can sponsor their spouse and children of any age. Family members are also permitted to remain in the UAE even in the event of the visa holder’s death.

5. How Many Indians Live in the UAE?

Approximately 3.5 million Indians reside in the UAE, accounting for nearly 35% of the country’s total population. This makes them the largest foreign community in the UAE.

6. What Are the Investment Requirements?

  • Investment of at least AED 2 million (around ₹4.67 crore) in a UAE-accredited investment fund.
  • Alternatively, holding an industrial or commercial licence with a minimum capital of AED 2 million and proof of annual tax payment of AED 2.5 lakh.
  • Property owners with real estate valued above AED 2 million are eligible for a 5-year Golden Visa.

7. Can Golden Visa Holders Travel Freely?

Yes. Golden Visa holders can stay outside the UAE for more than six months without their visa being cancelled — offering a significant advantage for global professionals and investors.

8. Why Is It Significant for Indians?

  • The UAE remains one of the most preferred destinations for Indian professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors.
  • The visa enhances career, business, and family settlement opportunities in a stable and prosperous Gulf nation.
  • It also deepens India–UAE relations, particularly following the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in 2022.
