Cyclone Dana, brewing in the Bay of Bengal, is a reminder of the importance of clear communication during severe weather events. But how do cyclones get their names, and why does it matter?
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and its Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre in New Delhi coordinate the naming process for cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea. Thirteen member countries, including India and Bangladesh, each provide a list of 13 names, which are arranged alphabetically by country and used sequentially.
Recent examples include Cyclone Mocha (Yemen) and Biparjoy (Bangladesh). "Dana," meaning "a beautiful, precious pearl" in Arabic, was Qatar's contribution.
This systematic approach ensures clarity and efficiency in communicating about cyclones, ultimately contributing to better preparedness and response, which can help save lives and livelihoods.
