Significance of the Bairabi–Sairang Rail Line

The Bairabi–Sairang rail line plays a crucial role in connecting Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, to the national railway network. This development marks an important milestone, making it the fourth capital in Northeast India to achieve such connectivity, following Guwahati, Itanagar, and Agartala.

Details of the Bairabi–Sairang Line

Spanning a length of 51.38 km, the project has a revised sanctioned cost of Rs 5,021.45 crore. The construction has reached significant completion milestones, with 94.52% of the physical work and 97.13% of the financial aspects completed. A successful trial run took place on May 1, 2024, showcasing the line's readiness for operation.

Engineering Challenges

The construction of the Bairabi–Sairang line was not without its challenges. The project required the construction of 14 tunnels, totaling 12,853 meters in length, along with 55 major and 87 minor bridges. Notably, Bridge No. 196 stands at an impressive height of 104 meters, surpassing the height of the iconic Qutub Minar.

Other New Railway Lines in Northeast India

  • Dimapur–Kohima (82.5 km) to connect Nagaland’s capital
  • Murkongselek–Pasighat (26.15 km) for improved Assam-Arunachal connectivity
  • Sivok–Rangpo (45 km), bringing railway access to Sikkim for the first time
  • Jiribam–Imphal (111 km) to enhance connectivity to Manipur’s capital

Special Features of the Sivok–Rangpo Project

The Sivok–Rangpo project is particularly noteworthy as it will provide railway access to Sikkim for the first time. This ambitious project includes the construction of 14 tunnels, one of which measures an impressive 5,300 meters in length.

Progress of the Jiribam–Imphal Project

The Jiribam–Imphal project is currently 91% complete and aims to fully integrate Manipur’s capital into the broader railway network, enhancing the region's connectivity.

Double Line Projects in Assam

Yes, Assam is witnessing significant progress in double line projects. Major works include the New Bongaigaon–Goalpara–Kamakhya and New Bongaigaon–Rangiya–Kamakhya routes, with a total of 232 km completed.

Investment in Railway Development

In terms of financial investments, a total of Rs 74,972 crore has been sanctioned for railway development in the region, with Rs 40,549 crore already spent by March 2024. For the fiscal year 2025-26, an additional allocation of Rs 10,440 crore has been made.

High-Speed Train Services in the Region

Plans for high-speed train services are underway, with two Amrit Bharat trains and the Vande Bharat services already operational between key cities in Northeast India, including Guwahati, New Jalpaiguri, and Howrah.
