Nepal has recently extended the survey license date for the ambitious West Seti Hydropower Project. This development, led by NHPC, aims to facilitate Indian power companies in executing significant energy projects in the Himalayan region. Additionally, SJVN has received approval to work on a direct agreement for another project, further strengthening the collaboration between Nepal and India in the energy sector.
The West Seti Hydropower Project is designed as a 750 MW hydroelectric storage facility located on the Seti River, a tributary of the Karnali River in Nepal. Unlike conventional run-of-river projects that depend solely on river flow for power generation, this project features a large reservoir for water storage. This innovative approach allows for the accumulation of water during the monsoon season, ensuring consistent electricity generation throughout the year, even during dry months.
The development of this project is spearheaded by India's National Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. (NHPC), reflecting a significant Indo-Nepal collaboration in the energy domain.
The project is expected to generate approximately 3,636 GWh of energy annually, marking a significant contribution to the region's power supply.
The West Seti project is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership model, primarily led by NHPC. A notable feature of the Power Purchase Agreement is that Nepal will receive 21.9 percent of the electricity generated as free supply. The remaining power will be exported through the Power Trade Corporation India Limited, enhancing regional energy cooperation and stability.
