The 63rd Walong Day observance united military leaders, veterans, and civilians in a heartfelt tribute to the extraordinary courage of Indian soldiers during the 1962 Battle of Walong. Held on November 15 and 16, 2025, in Arunachal Pradesh, the event celebrated bravery, heritage, and the enduring civil-military bond in the region.
The ceremonies were graced by senior military officials, including the Eastern Army Commander and the GOC Spear Corps, as well as the Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh. A solemn wreath-laying at the Walong War Memorial marked the centerpiece of the final day, alongside the unveiling of statues dedicated to the brave soldiers of the high-altitude frontier battle.
The eve of Walong Day on November 15 featured a captivating Light and Sound Show, drone formations, and sand art installations. Musical and cultural presentations vividly narrated the fierce resistance offered by Indian troops, highlighting the sacrifices made under extreme Himalayan conditions.
The Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh paid homage to the 388 soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the battle. He emphasized the unity between local communities and the Army, announcing plans to develop Walong as a historical and tourist destination. Initiatives such as the Sunrise Festival, a War Memorial Museum, and enhanced digital and road connectivity were outlined.
The Battle of Walong in 1962 saw Indian troops holding out for 27 days against much larger Chinese forces. The 63rd commemoration included cultural performances, marathons, treks, and expeditions, with the Walong War Memorial and Helmet Top War Memorial serving as key sites to honor the fallen soldiers. Plans for border tourism development include upgraded infrastructure and annual cultural festivals.
War veterans and families of fallen soldiers were honored for their resilience and contributions. Interactions with veterans of the 4 Sikh Regiment and other units added emotional depth to the ceremony. Local artists and Army personnel presented traditional performances, reinforcing the region’s cultural richness and the continued inspiration drawn from the Spirit of Walong.
