The city of Bengaluru is grappling with a severe water crisis, primarily due to its rapid urban expansion which has outpaced updates to its water infrastructure. This has led to depleted aquifers and an over-reliance on deep bore wells.
Bengaluru does receive substantial rainfall, comparable to notoriously wet cities like Seattle. However, the crux of the issue lies in inadequate water management and infrastructure, rather than the amount of rainfall itself.
The water scarcity has deeply affected daily life in Bengaluru. Schools often lack water to flush toilets, households face frequent water supply disruptions, and there is a rise in waterborne diseases such as typhoid fever.
The city’s water management system has lagged behind due to slow planning for growth, fragmented management across governmental agencies, and reliance on outdated water supply methods.
Bengaluru primarily depends on water pumped from the Kaveri River, located over 50 miles away, along with bore wells. This dual system only meets about half of the city's water needs.
Bore wells are deep, narrow wells that extract water from aquifers. The unchecked proliferation of unauthorized bore wells has led to significant depletion of aquifers and unsustainable water extraction practices.
Several innovative solutions are being considered to address the crisis. Initiatives like rejuvenating local lakes to serve as sustainable water sources and implementing rainwater harvesting are underway. These efforts aim to decentralize the water supply and reduce reliance on distant water sources and bore wells.
The local government is focusing on greener, more effective solutions, emphasizing innovative, data-driven methods to revive lakes, recharge aquifers, and expand rainwater harvesting. Community involvement is also crucial, with residents, tech workers, and local leaders collaborating on projects to rejuvenate lakes and promote sustainable water practices.
To resolve Bengaluru’s water issues, a comprehensive approach is essential. This involves infrastructure overhaul, sustainable water management practices, community engagement, and significant investment in green technologies.
