What is the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM)?

The Atal Innovation Mission is a key initiative launched by the Government of India designed to foster a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across the nation. Its primary objective is to create a supportive ecosystem that nurtures innovation through various means, including incubators, start-ups, and skill development programs.

What is AIM 2.0?

AIM 2.0 represents the next phase of this mission, focusing on expanding and strengthening India's innovation and entrepreneurship landscape. This phase introduces new strategies aimed at addressing existing gaps and enhancing the quality of outputs, including innovative products and job creation.

Funding for AIM 2.0

The Indian Cabinet has allocated a substantial ₹2,750 crore for AIM 2.0, ensuring funding for the mission until March 31, 2028. This financial support is critical for implementing various initiatives under AIM 2.0.

Core Objectives of AIM 2.0

The core objectives of AIM 2.0 include:

  • Expanding innovation through the establishment of Atal Tinkering Labs and Atal Incubation Centres.
  • Creating better jobs, innovative products, and high-impact services.
  • Strengthening India’s position in the Global Innovation Index and enhancing its start-up ecosystem.

Enhancing India’s Competitiveness through AIM 2.0

AIM 2.0 plans to enhance India's competitiveness by implementing new initiatives that will:

  • Increase the number of innovators and entrepreneurs (input).
  • Improve the success rate of start-ups (throughput).
  • Enhance the quality of innovations and products (output).

Contribution to the Global Innovation Index

Currently, India ranks 39th on the Global Innovation Index. AIM 2.0 is designed to elevate this rank by cultivating a robust ecosystem for innovation, supporting aspiring entrepreneurs, and promoting global competitiveness.

Significance of AIM in 'Viksit Bharat'

AIM aligns itself with the vision of 'Viksit Bharat' (Developed India). By strengthening innovation networks, it aims to achieve sustainable growth, foster self-reliance, and prepare India for a significant role in global technology and entrepreneurship.

Examples of AIM's Impact So Far

Some notable impacts of the AIM initiative include:

  • Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs): These labs encourage innovation among school students by providing them with resources and mentorship opportunities.
  • Atal Incubation Centres (AICs): AICs offer funding and support to start-ups, thereby contributing to job creation and the overall growth of various industries.

Future of AIM 2.0

The future of AIM 2.0 looks promising as the mission plans to integrate efforts from state and central governments, academia, industry, and local communities to create a comprehensive innovation ecosystem. As emphasized, “Success is not just about ideas; it’s about making those ideas happen.”
