With a melting point of 170°C, it is highly soluble in water. When heated in a water solution, it decomposes to release nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. This compound is also a fundamental ingredient in the production of commercial explosives, particularly slurry explosives used in mining operations.
On its own, ammonium nitrate does not exhibit explosive properties. It requires the addition of other substances, such as fuel, to form an explosive mixture. To detonate these mixtures, initiators like detonators are necessary. This need for combination and initiation highlights the compound's latent instability when mixed appropriately.
India has implemented stringent regulations regarding ammonium nitrate due to its potential dangers. Under rules established in 2012 and revised in 2021, any mixture containing more than 45% ammonium nitrate is classified legally as an explosive. District Magistrates can authorize possession of up to 30 metric tonnes, while larger quantities demand approval from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO). PESO is responsible for issuing licenses concerning the manufacture, storage, transportation, and use of substantial amounts of ammonium nitrate.
