The recent study indicates that 2 out of every 5 amphibians are facing the threat of extinction. This alarming statistic is primarily attributed to climate change and habitat degradation.
The study was coordinated by the Amphibian Red List Authority, which is part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The initiative was managed by Re:wild, a prominent wildlife conservation organization.
In total, over 8,000 amphibian species were evaluated, with 2,286 species assessed for the first time, highlighting the extensive scope of the research.
The study identifies several key threats to amphibians. Climate change serves as the main threat for 39% of species that are edging closer to extinction. In addition, habitat destruction impacts 93% of all threatened species, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.
Amphibians are particularly vulnerable due to their high sensitivity to environmental changes. This makes them “climate captives” who struggle to adapt to impacts like extreme heat, wildfires, and droughts.
The study stresses the importance of protecting habitats and corridors that are crucial for biodiversity. Expanding these protections is vital for safeguarding amphibian populations and promoting environmental health.
For those interested in more detailed findings, the data will be published on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, providing comprehensive insights into the status of amphibians worldwide.
