The Centre has announced a groundbreaking initiative to introduce an Artificial Intelligence (AI) curriculum for students starting from Class 3, beginning in the 2026-27 academic year. This move signifies a significant step in embedding emerging technologies into the foundational stages of education.
Artificial Intelligence holds immense potential to tackle critical challenges in the educational realm, enhance teaching methodologies, and accelerate efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which advocates for Quality Education. AI is transforming not only the educational landscape but also employment sectors, thus necessitating the equipping of students with future-ready Stability and skills from an early age. A report by NITI Aayog projects that AI will create approximately four million jobs by 2030, underscoring the demand for advanced digital competencies and adaptability.
This initiative is led by the Department of School Education and Literacy. The curriculum is strategically aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023.
The primary objective is to equip students with critical 21st-century competencies, promoting the responsible, inclusive, and contextual use of technology. This will be achieved through themes such as "AI for Public Good" and "The World Around Us (TWAU)".
The implementation will see collaboration between NCERT and CBSE, working under the Coordination Committee for NCF-SE to ensure a seamless integration process, structured rollout, and robust quality assurance.
This initiative marks a transformative step in India’s educational landscape, facilitating students to build foundational AI literacy and prepare them for a rapidly evolving, technology-driven future.
