India is on the brink of securing the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with formal approval expected at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow. Ahmedabad has emerged as the leading host city, marking a major stride in India’s long-term plan to expand its global sporting footprint. The decision would bring the multi-sport event back to the country after two decades.
The Commonwealth Sport Board has already recommended India’s bid following an extensive evaluation of technical delivery, infrastructure, governance standards, athlete experience, and alignment with core sport values. The upcoming vote is expected to formally endorse the bid, completing a process that began months earlier. India’s presentation at the Assembly will outline its roadmap for a successful edition of the Games.
Ahmedabad was chosen over Abuja, Nigeria, with the latter encouraged to strengthen its case for the 2034 event. The city has developed rapidly as a sports hub, home to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and the world’s largest cricket stadium. It has already hosted major international championships and is preparing for the World Police and Fire Games in 2029, demonstrating readiness for a large-scale multi-sport event.
Hosting the 2030 event aligns with India’s larger objective of bidding for the 2036 Olympic Games, also proposed for Ahmedabad. The Commonwealth Games would serve as a pivotal milestone, showcasing India’s organisational strength and sporting diversity. Officials have assured a full-strength programme including high-medal-yield disciplines such as shooting, wrestling, hockey, kabaddi, and kho kho.
A formal declaration is expected around 6:30 pm IST, with India represented by senior officials including the Joint Secretary (Sports), the IOA President, and Gujarat’s Sports Minister. With preparations underway and strong administrative backing, Ahmedabad is positioned to deliver an expansive and modern edition of the Games.
