India’s National Quantum Mission: An Overview

The launch of India's National Quantum Mission marks a significant milestone in the advancement of quantum technologies. This mission is set to engage over 150 researchers and 40 institutions, reflecting the country's commitment to being at the forefront of this high-tech field.

Key Objectives of the Mission

  • Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs): The establishment of specialized centers focusing on various domains such as quantum computing, communication, sensing & metrology, and materials & devices.
  • Selection Process: A call for pre-proposals is currently open, with a deadline set for March 21. The final selections are anticipated by April-May.
  • Expert Panel: The Mission Technology Research Council will manage the evaluation and selection of proposals and institutions.
  • Technical Groups: These groups, which consist of academic, R&D, and industry partners, play a crucial role in the successful execution of the mission.

Timeline for Implementation

The submission window for pre-proposals is open until March 21, with final selections expected by April-May. This structured timeline is designed to ensure a smooth progression towards achieving the mission's goals.

Funding Overview

The overall budget allocated for this mission is approximately Rs 6,000 crores spread over eight years. Of this, around Rs 3,000 crores will be specifically allocated for the T-Hubs, which includes Rs 1,000 crores dedicated to the Quantum Computing T-Hub.

Primary Focus: Quantum Computing

Quantum computing has been identified as the primary focus due to its immense potential and the pressing need for India to close the technological gap on a global scale. This strategic focus aims to nurture innovation and foster advancements in this critical area.

Implementation Strategy

Each Technical Group will be led by a Lead Principal Investigator (LPI) who will be responsible for coordinating efforts and submitting comprehensive proposals. This leadership structure is aimed at enhancing the operational efficiency of the mission.

T-Hub Structure

The proposed T-Hubs will function as a Section 8 company, which is designed to ensure effective and efficient operations, enabling a collaborative environment for research and development in quantum technologies.
