The increasing intensity and frequency of heat waves in India pose a significant challenge to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is particularly evident in areas related to health, well-being, sustainable cities, and life on land.
Heat waves can lead to health emergencies and adversely affect agriculture, which in turn impacts livelihoods and food security across the nation.
Need for Inclusion of Heat Waves: Currently, India’s climate vulnerability assessments do not adequately incorporate the impacts of heat waves. This oversight can lead to an underestimation of climate risks, hindering effective planning for SDG achievements.
Comprehensive Risk Assessment: Including the impacts of heat waves in vulnerability assessments can provide a more accurate picture of climate risks. This, in turn, leads to better-targeted actions and policies.
Urban Heat Island Effect: Delhi has recognized urban heat islands as a climate risk but still lacks comprehensive measures to address the broader impacts of heat waves.
Need for Updated Assessments: To effectively manage heat-related risks, Delhi’s climate action plan needs to integrate heat wave impacts into its vulnerability assessments.
Significant Vulnerability to Heat Waves: Research indicates that over 90% of India falls under high-risk categories for heat wave impacts, which is significantly higher than the risk levels indicated by the current Climate Vulnerability Index (CVI).
Differences in Assessment Indices: The Heat Index (HI) used in the study demonstrates a greater vulnerability than the CVI, suggesting the need to revise the CVI to include heat wave risks.
Standardization Across Levels: There’s a critical need to standardize climate vulnerability assessments across federal, state, and local levels to include heat-related risks.
Incorporating Extreme Weather Events: Climate vulnerability indices like the CVI should integrate parameters related to extreme weather events, including heat waves, to better evaluate SDG progress.
The increasing severity of heat waves in India underscores the urgent need to integrate these climate risks into vulnerability assessments and action plans. Doing so is crucial for accurately gauging progress towards SDGs and implementing effective strategies to mitigate heat-related impacts on health, agriculture, and overall sustainable development.
