A recent study conducted by BiasWatchIndia has uncovered troubling statistics regarding the representation of women in STEM faculty positions across India. The findings reveal that less than one in five faculty members in these fields are women, with an overall representation of only 16.6%. This gender imbalance becomes even more pronounced in top-ranked institutions such as IITs and IISc, where women constitute merely 10% of the faculty.
According to the study, the representation of women in STEM fields stands at 16.6%. This figure highlights an urgent need for institutional reforms and proactive measures to enhance gender diversity in academic environments.
The situation is particularly dire in prestigious institutions like IITs and IISc, where the percentage of female faculty members drops to a mere 10%. This stark contrast raises questions about the inclusivity of these elite institutions.
When examining specific fields, the data reveals that engineering and chemistry are among the worst offenders, with only 8.3% of faculty members being women. Conversely, biology demonstrates a slightly better representation at 22.5%, emphasizing the varying degrees of gender diversity across different disciplines.
The research also highlights a concerning phenomenon known as the "leaky pipeline," where the attrition rate of women faculty increases as they advance in their careers. This trend signals systemic issues that hinder the professional growth of women in STEM.
Moreover, the study points out that a significant number of STEM conferences lacked women speakers altogether, further perpetuating the existing gender disparity and limiting visibility for female scientists.
In light of these findings, several solutions have been proposed to address the gender gap in STEM faculties:
To effectively tackle the gender disparity in STEM, institutions should consider the following actionable insights:
Addressing these issues is crucial for creating a more equitable environment in STEM fields, ultimately benefiting academia and society as a whole.
