India Launches the Global Biofuel Alliance

At the recent G20 Leadership Summit held in New Delhi, India officially launched the Global Biofuel Alliance (GBA). This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of biofuels, establish global standards, and foster active participation from various industries.

Membership and Participants

The GBA has garnered interest from 12 international organizations and 15 countries, which are keen to be among the founding members. Additionally, four nations have expressed a desire to join as observer countries. However, notable absences from this alliance include China, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.

India's Leadership in Global Initiatives

India has a history of spearheading global development initiatives, having previously launched the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI). The GBA reflects India’s ongoing commitment to addressing global challenges through international cooperation.

Objective of the Global Biofuel Alliance

The primary objective of the GBA is to tackle global challenges related to sustainable biofuels while promoting broader international collaboration. It aims to leverage the potential of biofuels for mitigating climate change and achieving sustainable development goals.

Promotion of Biofuels in India

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) in India has been actively advocating for the use of biofuels. The country has engaged in consultations and made recommendations involving nations such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, and the United States. These discussions culminated in the establishment of the GBA.

GBA Membership Structure

The GBA will feature three distinct membership categories: member countries, partner organizations, and industries. It will also set technical standards for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in collaboration with relevant industry bodies, further enhancing global collaboration for the rapid adoption of biofuels.

Global Biofuels Production Needs

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has projected that global sustainable biofuels production must triple by 2030 to meet net-zero emissions targets by 2050. Liquid biofuels have significantly contributed to reducing oil consumption, particularly in the transport sector. Currently, the majority of biofuel production is concentrated in the United States, Brazil, Europe, and Indonesia.

In India, the share of ethanol in gasoline vehicles reached 6% in 2022, which is double the levels seen in 2019. The launch of the GBA underscores India’s commitment to promoting sustainable biofuels on a global scale and addressing the associated challenges for their adoption.
