The State Food Safety Index (SFSI) is an annual benchmarking model established by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to assess and rank the performance of States and Union Territories (UTs) based on key food safety parameters. This initiative, launched in 2019, aims to foster healthy competition and elevate food safety standards throughout the nation.
States and UTs are evaluated based on five critical parameters:
These parameters provide a thorough assessment of how effectively each state or UT upholds food safety standards.
For the year 2023-24, the leading states were:
Moreover, Gujarat was acknowledged with a Special Mention for its remarkable efforts in enhancing food safety.
Nagaland received the Special Recognition award for its exceptional performance in food safety among the North Eastern Hilly States. It was notably the only state from the Northeast to be honored at the Global Food Regulators Summit 2024, held in New Delhi.
The SFSI fosters improvements in food safety practices among states and UTs by encouraging transparency, compliance, and innovation. Through the creation of a competitive atmosphere, it aids in identifying strengths and weaknesses while facilitating the adoption of best practices from across the nation.
States and UTs that excel in the SFSI are recognized for their commitment to enhancing public health by ensuring access to safe and nutritious food. Achieving an SFSI award can significantly bolster a state's credibility and serve as a model for others in terms of food safety infrastructure and governance.
