What are Accelerated Degree Programmes (ADPs) and Extended Degree Programmes (EDPs)?

ADPs: These programmes enable students to complete their undergraduate degree in a shorter timeframe, typically in less than three or four years, by taking on additional credits each semester. For instance, a dedicated student pursuing a Bachelor’s in Science might take extra coursework throughout their semesters, allowing them to graduate in just 2.5 years instead of the usual three.

EDPs: In contrast, these programmes allow students to extend their study duration, providing flexibility for those facing challenges such as health issues or personal commitments. For example, a student juggling work and studies might choose to add an extra semester, thus completing a three-year Bachelor’s degree over four years.

What is the Objective of These Programmes?

The primary aim of ADPs and EDPs is to cater to various academic needs of students:

• ADPs: These programmes are designed to assist high-achieving students in graduating early, enabling a swifter transition to higher studies or the workforce. For example, a student excelling in an engineering programme might leverage an ADP to finish their degree sooner and immediately pursue a Master’s programme.
• EDPs: These are particularly beneficial for students who require additional time to fulfill their academic obligations or manage personal responsibilities. For instance, a working student enrolled in a Commerce degree may opt for an EDP, allowing them to distribute their coursework over five years instead of four.

How Will These Programmes Be Implemented?

• Application Process: Institutions will assess applications for both ADPs and EDPs based on students’ academic achievements and credit requirements.
• Modes of Study: Students will have the flexibility to complete their courses through traditional classroom settings, online platforms, or hybrid approaches. For example, one student may choose to undertake online courses to acquire 40% of the credits needed for their degree.
• Flexibility in Degree Duration: The degree documentation will indicate whether the programme was completed in an accelerated or extended timeframe.

When Will These Options Be Available?

These innovative programmes are scheduled for introduction in the 2025–26 academic year, following the July–August session. A student starting their degree in July 2025 will have the option to select either ADP or EDP by the conclusion of their first or second semester.

Will There Be Limitations on Students Opting for These Programmes?

• EDP Enrolments: There will be no limitations on the number of students who can enroll in extended programmes.
• ADP Enrolments: Enrollment will be contingent upon successful completion of required credits and demonstrated academic performance.
